Management Profiles

Leon A. Dargis - Chairman. Leon began his career in June of 1959 after graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in Finance. Since 1972, he served as Senior Vice President of a bank trust division. Leon is responsible for starting a trust division and developing it into a company with assets under management of over $420 million. He takes great satisfaction in knowing that he left behind one of the largest trust divisions of an independent bank in the State of Indiana. The strategic plan he developed focused on delivering a very personalized trust and investment service designed to meet not only the financial, but also the personal needs of the client. His education, background and experience bring together the multiple skills of estate, investment and tax planning which is the focus of Harbour Trust. Leon remains dedicated to the trust profession and continues to be active in the management of Harbour Trust.

Leon was raised in Northwest Indiana and is married. He and his wife Sally live in Michigan City. Together they raised four sons. Leon has been involved in many civic organizations and has served as President of the local School Board of Trustees and St. Anthony Hospital Lay Board of Trustees. His current interest is focused on the continued growth and development of the LaPorte County Park Foundation where he serves as Treasurer and board member.

Robert P. Rose - President. Bob began his career in June of 1983 after graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. From June of 1983 until May of 1992 he served as Trust Investment Officer. During that time he created and managed working lists of approved stocks and mutual funds as well as implemented asset allocation strategies at the client level. In 1992, as Vice President and Trust Officer, he was actively involved in organizational teambuilding, strategic planning and direct management of client relationships. By 1997 he had earned the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative officer of a bank subsidiary responsible for trust and investment management services. Throughout his career, Mr. Rose has remained a dedicated student of his profession. He has completed courses through: The American Institute of Banking, Northwestern University-National Trust School, The American Management Association-The Management Course, and Cannon Financial Institute-Personal Trust Advanced Administration.

Bob is a native of Northwest Indiana and is married. He and his wife, Mary, have two children. For many years he was an instructor for Purdue University-North Central and The American Institute of Banking. He has volunteered his leadership skills to several organizations in Northwest Indiana and Chicago, IL. He remains actively involved in several locally based organizations. In addition to serving as Treasurer of the Ronald McDonald House near the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital for seven years, Bob served on the Board of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicago and Northwest Indiana. He currently serves on the advisory board for the Ronald McDonald House at the new University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.

George E. Wehrle - Vice President. George began his career in 1962 after earning a B.S. degree from Loyola University – Chicago and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University. Throughout his career, George has been a portfolio manager that prides himself in knowing the client and tailoring investments to meet the client’s unique needs. George is a Chartered Financial Analyst and brings tremendous investment experience and knowledge to Harbour Trust.

George and his wife, Linda, have lived in Southwestern Michigan since 1970. They have a son and two daughters. He is active in several community organizations throughout Northwestern Indiana as well as Southwestern Michigan. He was an instructor at Indiana University, South Bend for eleven years.

Stephanie K. Oberlie - Vice President & Trust Officer. Stephanie began her career in June of 1994 after graduating from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Resource Management. She has challenged herself learning the trust industry and has successfully completed the Personal Trust School program through Cannon Financial Institute at the University of Notre Dame. Stephanie is now designated by the Institute of Certified Bankers as a Certified Trust Financial Advisor.

Stephanie develops estate and tax plans coupled with investment strategies tailored to meet the goals of her clients. Her sensitivity and dedication enables her to achieve successful, long term relationships with her clients.

Stephanie was born and raised in Michigan City and currently serves on several not-for-profit boards. Her family stressed the importance of giving back to the community and this is now one of her philosophies. She is currently a board member of Michigan City Community Enrichment Corporation (MCCEC), LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra, Junior Achievement advisory board member, trustee for the Marquette High School Board of Limited Jurisdiction, and a member of the Unity Foundation of LaPorte County Gold Key Society. She is also a past recipient of the Athena Award.

Stephanie and her husband, George, currently reside in Porter County.

Brian C. Merrill - Trust Officer. Brian received his B.S. degree in Corporate Financial Management at Ball State University.  He joined Harbour Trust in 2008 with 6 years experience as a Portfolio and Investment Officer at Old National Trust and Horizon Bank and Trust.  Currently pursuing the completion of the CFA level II certification.

Brian, along with his wife and two children have recently relocated to Northwest Indiana from Gray, GA.

Michael K. Hackett - Trust Officer.
Mike began his career in August of 1993 after graduating from Ball State University with a B.S. degree in Finance, specializing in the financial services industry. Prior to joining Harbour Trust in 2001, Mike spent eight years serving as a Personal Trust Administrator with JP Morgan Chase. He was responsible for both personal trust and employee benefit accounts.

Mike has successfully completed the Personal Trust School program through Cannon Financial Institute at the University of Notre Dame. Mike earned the designation of Certified Trust Financial Advisor in 1998 and has enthusiastically worked to maintain this designation, as well as expand his knowledge of financial planning and investment management.

Mike was born and raised in Michigan City and is married. He and his wife, Tara, have two daughters. Mike served as Treasurer for the Michigan City Rotary Club for 10 years and was elected to serve as President as of July, 2008.

John Weithers – Trust Officer. John received his B.A. degree in English at Spring Hill College. Prior to joining Harbour Trust, he served as Trust Officer for 10 years at 1st Source Bank. In this role, he was directly involved with investment management of various retirement plans, compliance, and marketing. Currently pursuing a Certified Retirement Services Professional (CRSP) designation.

John resides in Long Beach. He is an active community volunteer and a former board member for The American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.

Administrative Support

Susan Kelly – Assistant Trust Officer. Sue brings 16 years of experience working in a highly regulated and confidential environment in the field of Human Resources Management. Sue provides direct administrative support to Bob Rose and works closely with our administrative officers in serving the special needs of our clients.

Sue and her husband, David and their 2 children, have lived in LaPorte County for 8 years. She enjoys sewing, decorating and dedicating much of her free time to her children’s special interests with Girl Scouts, band and volleyball.

Christina Trusty - Administrative Assistant. Chris holds a BLS in Accounting from Purdue University.  She has 6 years banking experience with emphasis on Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA), Employee Benefit Plans, and customer service.  She has attended several training seminars through Community Bankers Assoc. as well as Bankers Systems.

Chris is a life long resident of Northern Indiana and has three grown children.  She is an active member of her community and church to include being the financial directory for her local Thrivent branch, a fraternal organization that sponsors local as well as national outreach programs.

Deborah Merrill – Administrative Assistant. Debbie holds a BA in Fine Arts from Loras College in Dubuque, IA. She has 12 years banking experience with emphasis on customer service.

Debbie and her husband, Dave and their son, Zachary have resided in Michigan City for 20 years. She enjoys the outdoors, watercolor painting, quilting, art and crafts.

 

Operations

Susan H. Wright - Operations Manager/Compliance Officer. Susan received her B.S. Degree in Business Administration in 1978 after graduating from Valparaiso University. Before joining the staff at Harbour Trust, she spent over 20 years in the field of retail management where she developed particular strengths in the areas of operations, personnel management and customer service. She utilizes these skills at Harbour Trust where her goal is to provide organized, efficient and customer-friendly support.

Susan was raised in Michigan City, where she currently resides. She and her husband, Bob, have two sons.

Nancy K. Hawkins - Operations Officer. Nancy started her career in 1983 and held various corporate banking positions before moving into trust services in 1990. Beginning in 1991, she served as the operations officer of a trust division, managing the daily security settlement process and the income processing for assets totaling over $400 million. Ms. Hawkins continues to expand her knowledge through various courses offered by the American Institute of Banking, the Indiana Bankers Association, the American Bankers Association and the American Management Association. She received certification as a Trust Operations Specialist upon completion of the 3-year Cannon Financial Institute Trust Operations School in July of 1997.

Nancy was born and raised in Michigan City, Indiana, and is married. She and her husband, Rick, have four grown sons. She is a graduate of LaPorte County Leadership and has worked with several local organizations as a volunteer.""

Sara E. Russel - Operations Officer. Sara graduated from Valparaiso University in 1992 with a B.S. degree in Meteorology. Prior to joining Harbour Trust in 2007, Sara gained experience in the field of Retail Banking and Trust at First National Bank in Valparaiso, IN.  She served as Assistant Vice President & Trust Operations Officer where she was responsible for managing the overall Trust Operations area within the Trust Department.

Sara has successfully completed the Securities Operations School program offered by Cannon Financial Institute at the University of Notre Dame.  She also earned the Certified Securities Operations Specialist designation from The Institute of Certified Bankers in 2004.

Sara grew up in Culver, Indiana and moved to the Northwest Indiana area upon graduating from college.  She and her husband, Pete, now reside in southern LaPorte County

Mary Napier – Assistant Trust Officer. Mary started her career in 1983 at a local bank. She worked for 15 years in the Trust Department as a Support Service Specialist. She attended various seminars and has participated in internal training in Trust Operations.

Mary was born and raised in the LaPorte County. She is married, has two wonderful daughters and five grandchildren. She is very active with her church.
